A Place at the Table:
Engaging Communities in Planning for a Healthier Los Angeles for ALL

The UCLA Center for Research, Education, Training and Strategic Communication on Minority Health Disparities (CRETSCMHD) and its Partners for Planning are developing a strategic plan to identify the issues as well as potential actions and solutions to improve the physical and mental health status, health outcomes, access to care, and health care treatment of racial and ethnic minority and immigrant populations in the broader Los Angeles region.

The project is called “A Place at the Table: Engaging Communities in Planning for a Healthier Los Angeles for ALL” and involves an innovative, technology-supported approach to gather this information. We are using the technique of concept mapping and gathering wise opinions from change agents in the health field. By using an online process and working with our community partners to interview those who either don’t have access to online technology or wish to engage the process in a language other than English  we will be able to efficiently receive input from over 300  individuals, organizations and communities representatives - to ask them for their ideas on how we can achieve a healthier Los Angeles by reducing and eliminating physical and mental health disparities in racial and ethnic minority and immigrant populations.

At the end of this process the Center will engage with our community partners and others to move to an action plan that will engage Los Angeles’ health community to become bolder, more powerful and effective agents of change in order to reduce and or eliminate the physical and mental health disparities of racial and ethnic minority and immigrant populations in Los Angeles County. The Center will sponsor using the results from the planning process a workshop on Strategic Communications in which techniques and principles of communication regarding health and health care concerns can be packaged in order to create effective change engagement at the health district, city, county, state and federal levels for better health for ALL Los Angeles!
