About Dr. Allen:

Walter Allen is currently a Professor of Sociology at UCLA. He is also co-director of CHOICES, a longitudinal study of college attendance among African Americans and Latinos in California. Dr. Allen's research and teaching focus is on comparative race and ethnic relations, comparative family studies, higher education, desegregation, and the sociology of health. His most current research deals with academic experiences, choices, and college attainment among Black and Latino students; status of Black males in American society; skin color and status attainment among Blacks and Latinos; and social support and health among elderly Blacks. The American Sociological Association recently awarded Dr. Allen the prestigious DuBois-Johnson-Frazier Award (2002), an annual award given for a lifetime of research, teaching, and service to the community. Dr. Allen's many publications include The Color Line and the Quality of Life in America (co-authored with R. Farley) and College in Black and White: African American Students in Predominantly White and Historically Black Public Universities (coauthored with E. Epps & N. Haniff).
